The world needs more love letters.

Not only is this notion a fact of life, it’s a mission that was undertaken by one lonely young woman in New York.

In 2010, Hannah Brencher found herself overwhelmed by life and depressed after graduating from college.

So she started writing love letters. For strangers. She left them all over New York City. She wrote 400 letters.

Then she offered a service on her blog: If you sent her your email address, she would send you a love letter. No questions asked.

Requests poured in.

So much so, that Hannah founded a website, www.moreloveletters.com.

The website has gathered more than 20,000 people in 49 countries who have committed to leave letters in their community and to mail letters to people who have been nominated by their loved ones.

I do most of my writing on a computer, but I still believe in the power of a handwritten letter. I have a file folder of sweet letters from readers for when I need a pick-me-up.

Would you consider writing a love letter to a stranger?

I know you, dear readers. You are sweet and kind and I know you like to write letters because I’ve been blessed to receive them.

Leave a letter at a table in a coffee shop, or in the pocket of a jacket at a store. Leave a letter on the bus, or on a bench at a park. Write on the front, “If you find me, I’m yours!” Use pretty stationary and your best handwriting.

And fill it with lovely thoughts. Tell a stranger how wonderful they are, how life is hard but they’re always enough.

“Write what’s on your heart,” suggests the website. “Script a note of encouragement. Fill your letter with affirmations. Thoughts that are weighing heavy on you lately. Write the exact message you’d like to read in a letter today. Maybe it is a pick-me-up or a kind reminder that you are enough in this world.”

The only qualifier the website gives is that you don’t give your contact information if you’re writing a letter to leave for someone to find, only write www.moreloveletters.com on the letter.

The website also has a list of people who’ve been nominated by their friends and families to receive love letters. There are hurting people all over the world; the website tells the stories of disabled veterans, high school students, children with cancer. The people they love have told them how dear they are, but sometimes don’t we need a little more?
